In the midst of practising hard for the concert, selling tickets, and completing your homework, check out our banner, to be displayed on the actual night.
The band was first formed in 1982 and started off as a military band. Over the years, it evolved into the concert band of today.
Currently with about 50 members, the band has a dedicated team of young musicians and has strong support from the school. The band is one of the more popular co-curricular activity groups in the school and “striving towards excellence” is what the band believes in.
Focusing on enriching the members in music, discipline and team-spirit, the band organises camps, music exchange programmes and workshops to improve the skills of its members. The Manjusri Secondary School Concert Band clinched the Silver Award at the 2003, 2005 and 2007 Singapore Youth Festival Central Judging for Concert Bands. In the 2005 Sentosa Balloon Hats Festival, the band was awarded the 3rd Prize in the People’s Choice Award.
The band also performed its first public concert, mbrosia, at the Singapore Conference Hall in December 2007. A collaboration with Gan Eng Seng School Military Band, mbrosia was a platform for the band to showcase its talents. The collaborative effort proved to be an excellent opportunity for both bands to share ideas, creativity and good practices with each other. It also developed the band’s technical and musical skills.
In addition to mbrosia, the band has also performed during the school’s biannual production for performing arts groups, Montage, in 2004, 2006 and 2008. This production provides partnership opportunities for the Manjusri Choir, Dance Club, Chinese Orchestra and Concert Band to come together for a group effort to develop their standard of professionalism.
Led by resident conductor Simon Foo, and Brass Instructor Ng Kay Lim, it is the aspiration of the Manjusri Concert Band to achieve greater heights and aim for synergy in all aspects of the art of music-making.
